Today I ran at St Martins School in the St Martins relay race. I was really excited because I have great memories from last year. In the under 11s race, my school team won, and I was so proud of that moment. This year I wanted to win again. I also wanted to beat my personal best from last year and try to be the fastest boy there.
In this relay race, each team has four boys. Each boy runs about 1.8 kilometres. When one boy finishes, he tags the next boy, and the race continues until all four boys have run. The team with the fastest total time wins. The race starts with about 200 metres on grass, then goes onto the road for just over one kilometre, and finishes with another 200 metres on grass. I chose to wear my Nike Vaporfly trainers. I hoped they would be okay on the slippery grass and very fast on the road.
It was decided that I would run first for my team. As soon as the whistle blew, I sprinted off as fast as I could. Within the first 50 metres, I was already in first place. Once I got into the lead, I told myself I would not let anyone pass me. I pushed as hard as I could to give my team a strong start and to get a great time for myself too.
When I came off the grass and onto the road, I kept my speed high. I worked really hard all the way back to the grass at the end. I ran through the finish in 6 minutes and 45 seconds. My pace was 3 minutes and 43 seconds per kilometre. There was a big gap between me and the next runner, which made me very happy. I had given my team a brilliant start, and I hoped they would keep the lead.
My team did an amazing job. In the end, we won by at least 15 seconds. At the presentation, I found out that I was the fastest under 11 boy with my time of 6 minutes and 45 seconds. The next fastest boy ran 6 minutes and 58 seconds, so I was 13 seconds ahead. I also beat my personal best from last year by more than 20 seconds. That made me very proud. I received a first place plaque, and our team won a trophy as the fastest team. I feel strong and fast again, and my confidence is back. Winning two big races on two days in a row feels amazing. I feel on top of the world.
